GOVERNMENT SIVAGANGAI MEDICAL COLLEGE & HOSPITAL
DEPARTMENT OF ANATOMY
The Department of Anatomy, Government Sivagangai Medical College, started functioning with first batch of MBBS students in the academic year 2012-13.
NON TEACHING STAFF:
There are 2 rooms which can provide accomodation for 60 students with OHP facility
The department has well ventilated spacious dissection hall with a capacity of 100 students. So far students are provided with 5 embalmed bodies with a proportion of 1 cadaver for every 20 students, in each year.
One embalming room is available adjacent to dissection hall with adequate storage tanks and 2 electrical embalming machines.
COLD STORAGE ROOM: One cold storage room is available with a capacity of 12 cadavers with uninterrupted power supply.
MUSEUM: The department has a 150sq.m museum with 100 mounted specimens arranged section wise like embryology, neuroanatomy & gross anatomy (region wise). Museum is also provided with 20 embryology models, charts, articulated & disarticulated skeletons & 5 catalogues for each specimen.
Anatomy department has 150 sq.m histology lab with a capacity of 100 students. The lab is provided with 85 light microscopes & 5 dissection microscopes. Histology laboratory also has a histology section preparing room with adequate facilities.
LIBRARY: The department has a library with journals & 120 books covering various sub sections of anatomy including gross anatomy, histology, embryology, neuroantomy, osteology, surface markings, embalming & radiological anatomy.
RESEARCH LABORATORY: The department has an air conditioned and well equipped laboratory with internet facility with ongoing research on
Ø Morphology of Papillary muscles in Left ventricle
Ø Branching pattern of right Coronary artery
100 undergraduate students (I MBBS) are being taught detailed human anatomy every year since 2012. Students passed out with a pass percentage of 97% in the academic year 2012-13, and 99% in 2013-14.
Academic activities like lectures, dissection, histology practical, viva, projects, symposium, seminar & quiz are being conducted for undergraduate students. Active participation in vertical & horizontal integrated teaching programs are conducted in this department.
So far the department has been receiving bodies from voluntary donation & unclaimed orphan bodies.
SPECIAL SERVICES RENDERED TO THE PUBLIC:
· Acceptance of body donation from public is done, preserved & utilized for research & academic purposes.
· Preservation of acquired orphan bodies & utilization for teaching purposes.
· Creating awareness on voluntary body donation.
